Decompression Therapy

Hills DT – Decompression Therapy

Sciatica, degenerative discs, bulging and herniated discs, and spinal stenosis are frustrating and painful conditions that were difficult to manage in the past. Often patients were left with the choice between heavy medications or surgery. This has recently changed because of innovations that combined computer automation, traction, and new knowledge in biomechanics. The end result is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

The Hills DT, in its simplest form, non-surgical spinal decompression is a computer-driven, automated way to stretch the spine. The spinal discs comprise one third of the length of our spines. As we age, our discs and spinal joints become compressed and stiff. With injuries and aging, the discs can bulge or lose water content and this causes us to shrink in height. This can lead to the stooped posture that contributes to chronic back and neck pain, compression on the heart and lungs, advanced degenerative arthritis, and other skeletal signs of premature aging.
Compression of the spinal discs and joints is one of the major causes of back pain and contributes to degenerative spinal stenosis, the pain from herniated discs, mechanical back pain and other related spine disorders. Other treatments of lower back pain, including medication, injections, chiropractic, massage and exercise fail in certain cases. This is where decompression therapy is used as an adjunct.

Decompression Therapy – Why does it Work?

This FDA cleared technology relieves pain by enlarging the space between the discs. The negative pressure of decompression releases pressure that builds on to the disc and nerves, allowing the herniated and bulging disc to eventually go back into normal position. Decompression is the only treatment that is truly most effective for severe cases of herniation, degeneration, arthritis, stenosis and pressure on the nerve root. According to a clinical study performed by the Orthopedic Technological Review in 2004, said that 86% of all cases experienced spinal pain relief with disc decompression using the Hills DT.

Are there any side effects?

With appropriate patient selection, it is safer than surgery, epidural injections, or other comparable treatments. The important thing is that a prospective patient is evaluated thoroughly before initiating treatment. This will insure its safety and effectiveness.

What is Involved in the Treatment?

Our treatment protocol includes a series of decompression treatments  on our Hills DT Decompression Machine along with a special chiropractic adjustment method, physiotherapy modalities of heat, ice and interferential current, and a progressive exercise program. For most conditions it is a 6-10 week program.
